The U.S. Department of Commerce estimates consumers spent $513.61 billion online in 2018, up 14.2% from 2017. Total retail sales increased 4.1% to $3.63 trillion, according to its figures. The Commerce Department’s release of year-end retail data was delayed until mid-March due to the federal government shutdown. Overall, customers in the United States were satisfied with e-retail as a whole and online retail scored 82 out of 100 points in the 2018 ACSI (American Customer Satisfaction Index). In North America, Travel (55%) is tied with Books & Music (55%) as the most purchased category, just ahead of Fashion (54%). (Previous data from comScore has found Apparel & Accessories to be the most heavily purchased retail product category online, though.) E-commerce penetration is expanding across regions and categories. The electronics & appliances category shows the highest e-commerce penetration of any retail category, with nearly 20% of total sales occurring online in 2015. Clothing & accessories stores account for the highest total volume of internet sales ($24.2 billion), but e-commerce share remains below 10% (9.5%).
