Live gas line welding
I've got a repair coming up on a 6" sch.40 pipeline, it's natural gas, the line is about 8 miles long and it was installed in the 60's, we can shut it in and relief pressure but will always have residual gases, way to much line to purge it would take a truckload to purge, have made one repair already, replaced 60' of line, Do not weld onto a live natural gas pipe unless you are experienced with such welding and have the appropriate equipment. When welding live natural gas piping, make sure the piping is thick enough and your welding parameters are low enough that you can prevent burning through to the inside. WELDING A SPLIT TEE ON A LIVE LINE WITH 7018 - Duration: 9:44. TheWeldProfessor 476,601 views Under certain condition such as when tot tapping or welding on a flare line, there may be insufficient or interrupted flow that result in a flammable mixture during the welding operations. In these circumstances it may be necessary to purge or flood with steam, inert gas or hydrocarbon gas to prevent formation of flammable mixtures. We weld on live gas pipe every day outdoors, no problem as long as it's full of gas. A burnthrough isn't any big deal either, just weld it shut. Indoors the prudent thing to do is isolate the gas source and purge with nitrogen or CO2. Am looking at welding a 20mm collar onto a 300NB water line, materials are: Collar = A516 Gr 60, pipe is A106 Gr B. Pressure in line is 6600KPag, with demin water flowing through it at I'm interested in finding the basic process how this is assessed and the details involved. 90 fillet welds similar to that used for welding a sleeve to a pipe and 53 groove welds similar to that used to attach a branch pipe to a main pipe. A range of pipes were used from 0.125 inch (3.175mm) to 0.5 inch (12.7mm), 6 different pipe sizes. The pipes were pressurized with flowing nitrogen gas.

My question is… well, I've never done a gas line before. It's only being run about eight feet total, coming off a T-joint on an existing pipeline that
permits thermite welding on live pipelines providing a safety procedure is developed beforehand. This carried out on a major gas pipeline in North America.
I don't remember the exact concentrations but I believe it's somewhere around 15-24% natural gas that will ignite. a live line will be around 80 to 100 % natural gas. if the line is off you would have to purge it in order to get the concentration level way down.

Re: welding onto existing gas pipe ? evacuate? Maybe I didn't describe this clear enough. The pipe I'm welding on isn't energized, there is a union that we will disconnect on main. It's in a building, it was recently being used. I am able to get flow by purging nitogen in areas that I will be welding.
